Todd Ellis und Emmanuelle Clement dominieren auch im zweiten Rennen der FIM Sidecar Weltmeisterschaft am Sonntag in Assen und machen damit einen Doppelsieg perfekt. Ben Birchall bleibt dem Kampf um den Titel mit Hilfe von Ersatzfahrer Callum Crowe weiter auf den Fersen.
“Es ist noch ein langer Weg zum Titelgewinn”, sagte Emmanuelle Clement mit Schweißperlen auf der Stirn, nachdem sie und Todd Ellis (Team Ellis/Clement/LCR Yamaha) auch das zweite FIM Sidecar Rennen am Sonntag in Assen erfolgreich für sich entscheiden konnten. Direkt nach dem Start machten sie Druck auf Tim Reeves/Mark Wilkes (Team Bonovo Action Team/ARS Yamaha) und die in Führung liegenden Harry Payne und Kevin Rousseau (Steinhausen Racing/ARS Yamaha). Aber weder die Kampflinie von Reeves noch die gute Pace von Payne konnte die beiden daran hindern, zur Mitte des Rennen die Führung zu übernehmen und dem Rest des Feldes auf und davon zu fahren. “Wir haben uns von da an nur noch darauf konzentriert konstant unsere Runden zu fahren und uns einen möglichst großen Vorsprung herauszufahren“, schilderte Clement ihre Vorgehensweise. So sicherten sie sich den dritten Sieg in Folge und liegen mit neun Punkten Vorsprung vor ihren Verfolgern Birchall/Birchall an der Spitze der Gesamtwertung.
Doch Ben Birchall (Wyckham Blackwell by Birchall/LCR Honda) hält mit Unterstützung seines Ersatzbeifahrers Callum Crowe und einer starken Performance in beiden Läufen weiterhin den Kampf um den Titel aufrecht. Nach einem dritten Platz im Sprintrennen am Samstag gelang es ihnen erneut, am Sonntag die Duelle um den zweiten Platz einzutüten und das Maximale herauszuholen. “Wir hatten im Rennen heute mehr Zeit zum Aufzuholen, was uns sehr in die Karten gespielt hat”, sagte Crowe nach der Siegerehrung. Für den TT-erfahrenen Co-Piloten war es der erste Einsatz in der Weltmeisterschaft. Ob Tom Birchall bis zum nächsten Rennwochenende beim Sidecar-Festival in Oschersleben wieder fit sein wird, ist noch unklar.
Eine bärenstarke Leistung lieferten heute ebenfalls Stephen Kershaw und Ryan Charlwood (Kershaw Racing/LCR Yamaha) ab. Zunächst agierten die beiden im Schatten des Geschehens nach dem Start, jedoch fanden sie in der Mitte des Rennens ihren Rhythmus und arbeiteten sich beharrlich nach vorne. Mit insgesamt 26 Punkten an diesem Wochenende rücken sie in der Gesamtwertung auf den dritten Rang vor und verdrängen Harry Payne und Kevin Rousseau (Steinhausen Racing/ARS Yamaha) um einen Platz nach hinten, die im heutigen Rennen auch als Vierte die Ziellinie überquerten.
Tim Reeves und Mark Wilkes (Team Bonovo Action Team/ARS Yamaha) beendeten das Rennen lediglich auf Rang acht. Nach einer vielversprechenden Anfangsphase machte die Technik ihnen Probleme, wodurch sie nur noch mit eingeschränkter Leistung mitfahren konnten.
In der IDM Sidecar sah man mit Samuel und Jack Laidlow (Laidlow Marine/LCR Yamaha) zwei neue Gesichter auf dem Podium. Sie gewann vor Rupert Archer und Adam Christie (Hannafing Racing/LCR Yamaha). Kevin Cable und Charlie Richardson (L&W Racing/LCR Yamaha) sicherten sich den dritten Platz. Für die Meisterschaftsführenden Ted und Vincent Peugeot (Seventy-Four Racing Team/LCR Yamaha) kam aufgrund eines technischen Defekt das frühe Aus in Runde sieben, Lennard Göttlich und Uwe Neubert ereilte dasselbe Schicksal vier Runden später.
Die FIM- und IDM-Sidecars machen erst in einigen Wochen wieder weiter. Beim Sidecar Festival in Oschersleben am 7. und 8. Oktober wird der Kampf fortgesetzt, bevor schließlich Ende Oktober das Saisonfinale im portugiesischen Estoril stattfindet.

Todd Ellis and Emmanuelle Clement continued to dominate in the second race of the FIM Sidecar World Championship in Assen on Sunday to complete double victory. Ben Birchall remains hot on the heels of the title fight with the help of substitute rider Callum Crowe.
„There is still a long way to go to win the title,“ said Emmanuelle Clement with beads of sweat on her forehead after she and Todd Ellis (Team Ellis/Clement/LCR Yamaha) also successfully won the second FIM Sidecar race on Sunday in Assen. Immediately after the start they put pressure on Tim Reeves/Mark Wilkes (Team Bonovo Action Team/ARS Yamaha) and the leading Harry Payne and Kevin Rousseau (Steinhausen Racing/ARS Yamaha). But neither Reeves‘ battle line nor Payne’s good pace could stop them from taking the lead midway through the race and chasing the rest of the field. „From then on we just concentrated on consistently doing our laps and getting as big a lead as possible,“ Clement described their approach. This is how they secured their third win in a row and are now nine points ahead of their pursuers Birchall/Birchall at the top of the overall standings.
But Ben Birchall (Wyckham Blackwell by Birchall/LCR Honda) continues to keep the fight for the title alive with the support of his back-up co-driver Callum Crowe and a strong performance in both rounds. After a third place finish in the sprint race on Saturday, they again managed to bag the duels for second place on Sunday, and got the maximum out of it. „We had more time to catch up in the race today, which played into our favour a lot,“ said Crowe after the podium ceremony. For the TT-experienced co-driver, it was his first participitation in the World Championship. It is still unclear whether Tom Birchall will be fit again until the next race weekend at the Sidecar Festival in Oschersleben.
Stephen Kershaw and Ryan Charlwood (Kershaw Racing/LCR Yamaha) also put in a great performance today. Initially operating in the shadows after the start, the pair found their rhythm in the middle of the race and persistently worked their way to the front. With a total of 26 points this weekend, they move up to third overall, pushing Harry Payne and Kevin Rousseau (Steinhausen Racing/ARS Yamaha) back one place, who also crossed the finish line in fourth place in today’s race.
Tim Reeves and Mark Wilkes (Team Bonovo Action Team/ARS Yamaha) only finished the race in eighth place. After a promising initial phase, the technology made them problems, which meant they could only ride with limited power.
The IDM Sidecar saw two new faces on the podium with Samuel and Jack Laidlow (Laidlow Marine/LCR Yamaha). They won ahead of Rupert Archer and Adam Christie (Hannafing Racing/LCR Yamaha). Kevin Cable and Charlie Richardson (L&W Racing/LCR Yamaha) secured third place. Championship leaders Ted and Vincent Peugeot (Seventy-Four Racing Team/LCR Yamaha) were forced to retire early on lap seven due to a technical defect, while Lennard Göttlich and Uwe Neubert (Team Bonovo Action Team/LCR Yamaha) suffered the same fate four laps later.
The FIM and IDM sidecars will not continue for a few weeks. The battle will continue at the Sidecar Festival in Oschersleben on 7 and 8 October, before the season finale takes place in Estoril, Portugal, at the end of October.
