Im Kampf um den ersten Sieg des Sprintrennens in der Superside WM und IDM hatten souverän Ben und Tom Birchall die Nase vorn. Für eine gelungene Überraschung sorgten Harry Payne und Kevin Rousseau. Tim Reeves hatte hingegen Pech.
Gegen die Birchall Brüder (Wyckham Blackwell by Birchall/LCR Honda) scheint an diesem ersten Rennwochenende kein Kraut gewachsen zu sein. Souverän gewannen die Briten das Sprintrennen mit einem sicheren Vorsprung von knapp zehn Sekunden. Sichtlich zufrieden über das Ergebnis sagte Tom Birchall im Anschluss: “Bis auf den Start lief alles bestens.” Weil Ben Birchall nicht so gut ins Rennen gekommen war, übernahmen Harry Payne/Kevin Rousseau (Steinhausing Racing/ARS Yamaha) die Führung. Doch es dauerte nicht lange, bis Birchall zum Konter ansetzte und von da an die Führung nicht mehr aus der Hand gab.
Harry Payne hatte trotzdem allen Grund zur Freude. Für den auf der Isle of Man lebenden Briten war es das erste Rennen auf dem Sachsenring, das er auf dem zweiten Platz beendete. “Es lief wirklich gut für uns und die Strecke liegt mir”, so Payne. Er ließ aber auch durchklingen, dass am Setup des Seitenwagens noch gefeilt werden müsse.
Als Dritte kamen Todd Ellis/Emmanuelle Clement (Team Ellis/Clement/LCR Yamaha) über das Ziel. Die Weltmeister des vergangenen Jahres profitierten allerdings kurz vor Schluss von den technischen Problemen bei Tim Reeves/Mark Wilkes (Bonovo Action Team/ARS Yamaha). Der Routinier Reeves kämpfte sich zu Beginn von Rang sieben auf die dritte Position und gewann zunehmend an Geschwindigkeit, sodass er Ellis davonziehen konnte. In der vorletzten Runde kam es schließlich zum Defekt, weshalb Reeves seine Verfolger nur noch an sich vorbeiziehen lassen sah.
Auf Rang vier kamen Pekka Päivärinta und Ilse de Haas (Bonovo Action Team/ARS Yamaha), die allerdings mit einem hohen Verschleiß am Hinterrad zu kämpfen hatten. Bennie Streuer und Kevin Kölsch (Streuer Racing/ARS Yamaha) wurden Fünfte. Auch sie hatten in den Qualifyings technische Probleme, weshalb sie nur teilweise an den Trainings teilnehmen konnten.
Der sechste Platz von Josef Sattler und Luca Schmidt (Bonovo Action Team/ARS Yamaha) bedeutete für das Duo zugleich Rang eins in der IDM-Wertung. Lennard Göttlich/Lukas Krieg (Bonovo Action Team/ARS Yamaha) überquerten als Achte die Ziellinie und belegten in der klasseninternen Meisterschaft hinter Sattler die zweite Position. Dahinter folgten Janez Remse und Manfred Wechselberger (Remse Racing & PSV WELS/ARS Yamaha), die in der WM Neunte wurden. Max Zimmermann und Ronja Mahl (Zimmermann Racing/ARS Yamaha) komplettierten die Top-10 in der WM und wurden Vierte in der IDM.
Am Sonntag geht es weiter. Das zweite Rennen der Seitenwagen findet am Nachmittag um 13.45 Uhr statt und wird kostenlos unter www.idm.de/live übertragen.

WM/IDM Sidecar: Birchall wins, Reeves rolls out
In the battle for the first victory of the sprint race in the Superside World Championship and IDM had sovereign Ben and Tom Birchall in front. Harry Payne and Kevin Rousseau provided a successful surprise. Tim Reeves, on the other hand, was unlucky.
The Birchall brothers (Wyckham Blackwell by Birchall/LCR Honda) seem to be no match for this first race weekend. The Brits won the sprint race with a commanding lead of almost ten seconds. Visibly pleased with the result, Tom Birchall said afterwards: „Apart from the start, everything went well.“ Because Ben Birchall had not started the race so well, Harry Payne/Kevin Rousseau (Steinhausing Racing/ARS Yamaha) took the lead. But it didn’t take long for Birchall to counterattack and from then on he never relinquished the lead.
Harry Payne nevertheless had every reason to be happy. For the Briton, who lives on the Isle of Man, it was the first race at the Sachsenring, which he finished in second place. „It went really well for us and the track suits me,“ said Payne. However, he also let it slip that the sidecar setup still needed tweaking.
Todd Ellis/Emmanuelle Clement (Team Ellis/Clement/LCR Yamaha) crossed the finish line in third. Last year’s world champions, however, benefited from Tim Reeves/Mark Wilkes (Bonovo Action Team/ARS Yamaha) technical problems shortly before the finish. The veteran Reeves fought his way from seventh to third position at the start and increasingly gained speed, allowing him to pull away from Ellis. Finally, on the penultimate lap, a defect occurred, which is why Reeves only saw his pursuers pass him.
Fourth place went to Pekka Päivärinta and Ilse de Haas (Bonovo Action Team/ARS Yamaha), but they were struggling with heavy rear wheel wear. Bennie Streuer and Kevin Kölsch (Streuer Racing/ARS Yamaha) finished fifth. They also had technical problems in the qualifying sessions, which is why they could only partially participate in the practice sessions.
Sixth place for Josef Sattler and Luca Schmidt (Bonovo Action Team/ARS Yamaha) also meant first place in the IDM standings for the duo. Lennard Göttlich/Lukas Krieg (Bonovo Action Team/ARS Yamaha) crossed the finish line in eighth place and took second position in the intra-class championship behind Sattler. They were followed by Janez Remse and Manfred Wechselberger (Remse Racing & PSV WELS/ARS Yamaha), who finished ninth in the championship. Max Zimmermann and Ronja Mahl (Zimmermann Racing/ARS Yamaha) completed the top-10 in the WRC and finished fourth in the IDM.
