Im zweiten Rennen der Seitenwagen im Rahmen der Superside Weltmeisterschaft und IDM ging es weltmeisterlich zur Sache. Nicht nur die Gespanne wurden auf der Strecke ausgefahren, auch die Krallen kamen zum Einsatz.
Für Tom und Ben Birchall (Wyckham Blackwell by Birchall/LCR Honda) lief es auch im zweiten Rennen rund. Bis auf einen unsauberen Start, durch den sie die Führung in der ersten Runde an Harry Payne und seinem Co-Piloten Kevin Rousseau (Steinhausing Racing/ARS Yamaha) abgeben mussten, diese jedoch schnell wieder zurückerobern konnten, lief auch das zweite Rennen für sie reibungslos. Die Briten ließen ihren Seitenwagen laufen und gewannen am Ende vor tobender Zuschauerkulisse. “Es war großartig vor so vielen Zuschauern zu fahren und mit ihnen zu feiern”, sagte Ben Birchall freudig. Der mehrfache Weltmeister und sein Bruder verlassen den Sachsenring mit der vollen Punktzahl.
Stephen Kershaw und Ryan Charlwood (Kershaw Racing/LCR Yamaha) fuhren als Zweite ins Ziel. Sie profitierten in der Anfangsphase von einer Rangelei zwischen Harry Payne und den Birchall-Brüdern und setzten sich schließlich hinter die Spitze. Das Davoneilen von Ben Birchall konnte Kershaw allerdings nicht mehr stoppen.
Sam und Tom Christie (Hannafin Racing/LCR Yamaha) komplettierten das Podium mit dem dritten Platz, den sie sich gegen Payne in der elften Runde mit ausgestreckten Ellbogen zurückerobern mussten. Die beiden fielen nach dem Start von Rang drei leicht zurück, robbten sich jedoch nach und nach ans Heck von Panye heran. Dieser verlor zuvor seine Zweitplatzierung gegen Kershaw und versuchte sich gegen eine weitere Attacke mit allen Mitteln zu wehren. Doch Christie hielt Stand und ließ Payne/Rousseau schließlich hinter sich. “Wir sind zufrieden”, sagte Tom Christie nach dem Rennen, “allerdings hätten wir heute auch die Pace für den zweiten Platz gehabt, wenn wir besser gestartet wären”. Kershaw/Charlwood waren zum Zeitpunkt des Überholmanövers an Payne allerdings schon zu weit vorangeschritten, sodass sie für Christie nicht mehr einzuholen waren.
Die amtierenden Weltmeister Todd Ellis/ Emmanuelle Clement (Team Ellis/Clement/LCR Yamaha) retteten sich auf den letzten Metern noch so eben vor Ted und Vincent Peugot (Seventy-Four Racing/LCR Yamaha) auf Platz vier. Harry Payne kam nach einem Dreher in Runde 14 schließlich noch auf den sechsten Rang. Tim Reeves/Mark Wilkes (Bonovo Action Team/ARS Yamaha) konnten auch im zweiten Rennen mit einem leistungsschwachen Motor nicht mit der Konkurrenz mithalten und landeten auf sieben, vor Bennie Streuer/Kevin Kölsch (Streuer Racing/ARS Yamaha).
In der IDM-Wertung gewannen die Peugot-Brüder vor Josef Sattler und Luca Schmidt. Rang drei belegte das Nachwuchsteam Lennard Göttlich/Lukas Krieg (beide Teams Bonovo Action Team/ARS Yamaha), die im Rennen als Zwölfte über die Ziellinie rollten.

WM/IDM Sidecar: Fans celebrate Birchall’s double victory
In the second race of the sidecars in the Superside World Championship and IDM, it was world champion-like. Not only were the teams out on the track, but the claws also came into play.
For Tom and Ben Birchall (Wyckham Blackwell by Birchall/LCR Honda) things went well in the second race. Apart from a messy start that saw them relinquish the lead on the first lap to Harry Payne and his co-driver Kevin Rousseau (Steinhausing Racing/ARS Yamaha), but quickly regain it, the second race also went smoothly for them. The Brits kept their sidecar running and ended up winning in front of a raucous crowd of spectators. „It was great to race in front of so many spectators and celebrate with them,“ said Ben Birchall joyfully. The multiple world champion and his brother leave the Sachsenring with full points.

The pair fell back slightly from third after the start, but gradually clawed their way to the rear of Panye. The latter lost his runner-up position to Kershaw earlier and tried to fight off another attack by any means necessary. But Christie held firm and eventually left Payne/Rousseau behind. „We are pleased,“ said Tom Christie after the race, „however, we would have had the pace for second place today if we had started better.“ Kershaw/Charlwood, however, were already too far ahead by the time they overtook Payne, making it impossible for Christie to catch them.
The reigning world champions Todd Ellis/ Emmanuelle Clement (Team Ellis/Clement/LCR Yamaha) just about saved themselves from Ted and Vincent Peugot (Seventy-Four Racing/LCR Yamaha) in fourth place in the final meters. Harry Payne eventually finished sixth after spinning on lap 14. Tim Reeves/Mark Wilkes (Bonovo Action Team/ARS Yamaha) were also unable to keep up with the competition in the second race with an underpowered engine and ended up in seventh, ahead of Bennie Streuer/Kevin Kölsch (Streuer Racing/ARS Yamaha).
In the IDM standings, the Peugot brothers won ahead of Josef Sattler and Luca Schmidt. Third place went to the junior team Lennard Göttlich/Lukas Krieg (both teams Bonovo Action Team/ARS Yamaha), who crossed the finish line in twelfth place in the race.
