Beim ersten Qualifying der FIM/IDM Sidecar auf dem TT Circuit of Assen am Freitagnachmittag knüpften Harry Payne und Kevin Rousseau (Steinhausen Racing/ARS Yamaha) an ihrer gut aufgelegten Form an, die sie bereits in Spielberg unter Beweis stellten. In der sechsten Runde legte das Duo die Bestzeit von 1:45,171 Minuten vor, an die vorerst niemand mehr im Training herankam. “Es lief wirklich gut für uns und wir konnten das Gespann bereits passend auf die Strecke einstellen”, sagte Payne zufrieden. Mit der schnellsten Rundenzeit können der Brite und sein erfahrener Beifahrer Rousseau zuversichtlich ins zweite Qualifying am Samstagvormittag starten, wenn es um die endgültige Pole Position geht.
Tim Reeves/Mark Wilkes (Team Bonovo Action Team/ARS Yamaha) waren die Zweitschnellsten. In den ersten vier Runden führten sie das Feld an, fuhren dann jedoch in die Boxengasse, um einige geringfügige Anpassungen am Seitenwagen vorzunehmen. Obwohl sie ihre Zeit anschließend noch verbessern konnten, lagen sie letztendlich mit einem Rückstand von 0,089 Sekunden hinter der Zeit von Payne zurück.
Mit mehr als einer halben Sekunde Rückstand setzten sich Todd Ellis und Emmanuelle Clement (Team Ellis/Clement/LCR Yamaha) vorübergehend an dritter Stelle, gefolgt von Sam und Tom Christie (Hannafing Racing/LCR Yamaha) sowie Stephen Kershaw/Ryan Charlwood (Kershaw Racing/LCR Yamaha) auf Rang fünf.
Für Ben Birchall endete das erste gewertete Training mit seinem Ersatzbeifahrer Callum Crowe (Wyckham Blackwell by Birchall) auf sechster Position. Crowe ist nach dem Unfall in Spielberg für den an der Schulter verletzten Tom Birchall eingesprungen. Für den Briten, der die Birchall-Brüder seit Kindheitstagen kennt, ist es der erste Einsatz auf der Rennstrecke in Assen.

Although they were able to improve their time afterwards, they were ultimately 0.089 seconds behind Payne’s time.
More than half a second behind, Todd Ellis and Emmanuelle Clement (Team Ellis/Clement/LCR Yamaha) settled temporarily in third, followed by Sam and Tom Christie (Hannafing Racing/LCR Yamaha) and Stephen Kershaw/Ryan Charlwood (Kershaw Racing/LCR Yamaha) in fifth.
For Ben Birchall, the first scored practice session ended in sixth position with his substitute co-driver Callum Crowe (Wyckham Blackwell by Birchall). Crowe stepped in for the shoulder-injured Tom Birchall after the Spielberg accident. For the Briton, who has known the Birchall brothers since childhood, it is the first time he has raced on the Assen circuit.
